Taking care of your new ink

Congratulations on your new tattoo from Vallejo Ink Tattoo! Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure your tattoo heals beautifully and remains vibrant for years to come. Follow these instructions carefully to protect your investment and avoid complications.

The golden rule

The very first thing you absolutely MUST do is keep the bandage on for the time recommended by your artist (usually 2-24 hours). This protects the fresh tattoo from bacteria and irritation. After removing the bandage, gently wash the tattoo with mild soap and water.

Avoiding common pitfalls

One of the biggest mistakes people make is over-moisturizing or using the wrong products. Also, avoid picking or scratching the tattoo, as this can lead to infection and scarring. Submerging your tattoo in water (swimming, baths) should also be avoided until fully healed.

Recommended products

Use a mild, fragrance-free soap like Cetaphil or Dial Gold to wash your tattoo. For moisturizing, choose a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic lotion such as Aquaphor or Eucerin. Avoid products containing alcohol, petroleum, or lanolin.

Healing vs. potential problems

A healing tattoo may be slightly red, itchy, and flaky. However, excessive redness, swelling, pus, or fever could indicate an infection. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact a doctor immediately. Otherwise, continue to follow the aftercare instructions, and your tattoo should heal within 2-4 weeks.

How do I prepare for my tattoo or piercing appointment?

Eat a balanced meal, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol or blood-thinning medications for 24 hours beforehand. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being worked on.
